9 November 2012 Update

This week the HES met to:

  • review the results of the stress testing of oak and douglas fir wood samples,
  • evaluate the latest design of the release mechanism,
  • discuss fundraising priorities, and
  • determine the timing of ordering building materials.

October 9

Our next HES meeting will be tomorrow October 9th at 6 pm in room A327 in the Osbourne center. Following this meeting many of us will be going over to BJ’s off of Nevada in University Center for a bite to eat and to discuss club t-shirt designs! We hope to see everyone out at the meeting and then down at BJs!!

SGA Funding

We have great news! The Historical Engineering Society was approved by the SGA House of Representatives to receive the full $1,300 awarded to us by the Budget Committee! We will also have the wood samples for our throwing arm and frame to perform our own stress analysis by the next meeting and should have the test completed and the results from it shortly there after.  For those who do not know, our next meeting date will be the 9th of October form 6-8pm. We will have more details regarding the location of the meeting closer to the date and hope to see everyone there! We truly appreciate everyone’s commitment to this project, we could not move forward without you!!

Spetember 19 Meeting

Just a quick reminder to everyone that HES will be meeting on September 19 at 6 pm in the Osbourne Center in Room A-327. Signs will be posted to help people find the room and some light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see everyone there and look forward to discussing the organizations continued progress!

UCCS History Department

Sean Potter, an undergraduate history student who is enrolled in HIST 4150: Astrolabes, Arms, and Azulejos: Medieval Science, Technology, and Material Culture, located a web posting relating to a modern LEGO reproduction of the Antikythera mechanism. This posting is particularly intriguing as several students in HIST 4150 will be creating reproductions of medieval devices and technologies this semester. Hopefully, they will be inspired by this LEGO model.

So, what is the Antikythera mechanism?

According to Encyclopedia Britannica,

[It was an] ancient Greek mechanical device used to calculate and display information about astronomical phenomena. Frundraising Progress

Thanks to the diligent efforts of our Vice-Chair, Joe Sandoval, the HES has be awarded $1,300 by SGA, pending approval from the House of Representatives. This contribution, along with the $1,000 we received last semester, covers half of the expense of the trebuchet and is vital to our continued progress. To keep the funds we have been awarded, however, the trebuchet MUST be constructed THIS semester. We appreciate the efforts contributed by all of our members thus far, we only ask that you continue the work you have been doing so that we may complete this project by the end of the semester. Thank you to everyone for their hard work, we can, and will, complete this project so long as everyone remains committed to it!

Summary of September 5 meeting

First off, thank you to everyone who came to the meeting! We really appreciate your interest in, and support of, the trebuchet project. The first order of business at last night’s meeting was the history of HES, how it began, and where we currently are in the design and fundraising process. Specific details of the design discussed at last nights meeting were the release and locking mechanisms, the sling, the physical properties of white oak, and the degree of historical accuracy which is appropriate for the safety and functionality of the trebuchet.
